Discover The Biggest Diamond Mine
In the year 1955, in a small town called Mirny (Republic of Saja / Russia) located in a corner of Eastern Siberia there has been located a diamantiferous deposit that in a short time was destined to become the largest diamond mine in the world. The images we can see demonstrate the exceptional size of the mine. At 525 meters deep and 1,200 meters in diameter, it is the second largest hole excavated in the world. The development of the mine had begun in 1957, in the 1960s it produced 10 million carats each year. The exploitation of the mine lasted 44 years, finally closing in June 2001.
